Perry was born in Chicago with actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearances were on television as Jackie Harris, a character who was played by her mom in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she turned an adult, for fear of how stress can impact on their child. Perry said that she felt nervous to be an actor in high school but began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career with New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry come back to California to work as a theatre actress. She was in 2013 on stage with The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, she played a supporting role in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her father. This year, she was chosen to portray a younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again acting as a younger version Mary Cooper's character. Despite her connection to the family of her character, she got the role via an audition.
